Our Sustainability Approach

Sustainability Strategy

We have long practiced Sustainability, ever since our beginnings as local grocers. Our actions have always been driven by the understanding that being a good corporate citizen benefits our business as well as society as a whole.
Sustainability is one of the three pillars of our Group strategy – The New Game Plan – alongside Growth and Efficiency.

Our current Group Sustainability Strategy is structured around three pillars: Products, People and Planet. Within this there are six Group-level focus areas: Healthy Eating, Food Safety, Responsible Sourcing, Associate Health and Wellbeing, Associate Development and Climate Change. We also recognize our responsibility to address Resource Use and to support the Communities in which we work. We manage Resource Use and Communities at operating company level as this enables a more flexible and local approach.

In 2012 we are embedding our new 2020 Sustainability Strategy throughout our business. It is the next step on our journey to Sustainability that will enable us to drive more long-term growth and efficiency in a responsible way.

What do our stakeholders think about it?

We welcome the steps Delhaize Group is taking to make sustainability more central to its business model and strategy. As it expands into new markets, it faces growing challenges, from reducing its environmental footprint to addressing rising obesity levels. We look forward to the public launch of the 2020 Sustainability Strategy, as a platform for creating both the internal and external momentum to accelerate its sustainability activity and ambition.
